MEC becomes the first OMREN member to implement the IPv6 infrastructure

In continuation of its ongoing efforts to enhance the students’ educational experience and empower the teaching and learning process, Middle East College (MEC) implemented the IPv6 with Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN) and Omantel, becoming the first higher education institution in the Sultanate to adopt the technology. The IPv6 comes as a solution for the shortage of protocols’ addressed in the IPv4 and continued rapid growth in the number of devices connected to the internet, which is considered a global issue. IPv6 will allow the college to secure an unlimited number of devices over the internet, which will enhance the students’ online learning experience.
Wael Shawkat, Head of IT Services at MEC, expressed his happiness and pride in the achievement, saying: “Middle East College was the first OMREN member to professionally activate this service on the network infrastructure”. He added, “The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) and the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) issued decisions related to addressing the issue of the IP protocol, stressing the need to build local capacities related to publishing IPv6 addresses. In light of this IT Services team started the deployment initiative immediately and successfully completed the core devices IPv6 connectivity with Omantel.”
