Research and innovation are central to Middle East College’s strategic priorities, guided by the MEC Strategic Plan 2023–28 and its vision: Enterprising. Resilient. Impactful.

MEC’s research mission is to advance knowledge, foster innovation and create meaningful impact through research, entrepreneurship and collaboration. This supports Oman Vision 2040 and its ambition to build a knowledge-based economy driven by research, innovation and enterprise.

Our Research priorities

MEC’s research and innovation agenda focuses on three strategic goals:

• Foster a culture of impactful research by strengthening collaboration, developing research programmes and enhancing scholarly output.
• Enable researchers to become innovators through industry engagement, intellectual property awareness, knowledge transfer and research commercialisation.
• Cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset through incubation, hackathons, industry-linked projects and opportunities to develop ideas into viable ventures.

Research and Innovation Ecosystem

MEC supports research through an integrated ecosystem that connects research development, funding, knowledge transfer, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Centre for Research and Consultancy supports research development, proposals, funding, publication and dissemination.

The Technology Transfer Office supports intellectual property awareness and protection, knowledge transfer and the commercialisation of research outcomes in collaboration with industry.

The Innovation Hub provides an environment for developing, testing and refining ideas, prototypes and business models, supported by its Fabrication Lab.

The Entrepreneurship and Incubation Department supports students and researchers in developing promising ideas towards startups and sustainable enterprises.

Research at a glance Student Research at MEC

Research forms an important part of the student experience at MEC. Through the Integrative Knowledge Portfolio Process (IKPP), students begin developing research capability early in their studies. Students engage with real-world challenges, investigate problems, develop feasible solutions and gain opportunities to present and disseminate their work through scientific forums and publications.

This approach develops critical thinking, originality, research capability, and problem-solving skills while giving students experience applying knowledge to research, innovation, and industry challenges.

From Research to Impact

MEC encourages research to move beyond academic publication towards application and wider impact. Researchers and students are encouraged to collaborate with industry, explore opportunities for intellectual property and commercialisation, and develop promising ideas through innovation and entrepreneurship platforms.

MEC students and researchers have also gained recognition through national and international forums, including the IEEE GCC Congress, Startup Cup and Skyline Innovation Awards.

Through this approach, MEC research contributes to knowledge creation, real-world problem-solving, innovation, and the development of capabilities relevant to Oman’s future economy.
