Mathematics is considered as a fundamental and basis part of other academic fields like computer science, networks, business management, and engineering programmes to name a few. The college is offering the Mathematics course as a module in the General Foundation Programme. The department is also providing support to all the other academic departments including the Department of Computing, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Management Studies and the Centre for Foundation Studies at MEC.

The department is supporting the academic departments at MEC including the Department of Computing, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Management Studies. It also offers a Mathematics module in the General Foundation Programme (GFP) offered by the Centre for Foundation Studies.
The Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences has well-equipped computer laboratories, which provide hands-on experience for students studying various modules in Mathematics and Statistics. These aid the development of numeracy skills, problem solving ability and critical thinking.
MATLAB and SPSS are used with MS Excel in laboratory sessions.
The Department has also established an Engineering Science and an Engineering Physics laboratory which have facilities for conducting various basic to advanced level experiments.
Classroom Presenter and simulation software are used for classroom delivery to enhance students’ learning experience.
“Fun with Math Activities”
Participation in community outreach events and programmes organized by the college
The Math and Science Club conducted an exhibition for two days during the event “Math and Science Day”. It also organized the “Robotic Designing Competition” and workshops for the students.
The Math Referral Centre organised a daylong event “Math Teachers Gathering” in which two technical sessions on Using Technologies for Math Education and SPSS for statistical analysis were conducted for school teachers from the local community as a part of the community outreach program.
Inter-collegiate Mathematics Competition was held in MEC.
Innovative Teaching & Learning
In-house workshops in SPSS have been conducted by the Faculty of the Department.
In-house seminars on Omanisation and Tablet PC were presented.
Lecture notes for two modules were prepared in e-book format.
Innovative methods of teaching were introduced. They include the use of animation and poster presentations.
State-of-the-art Technology in Teaching like Classroom Presenter with Tablet PC and Simulation Software are being used for some of the modules.
Task-based exercises are given to students in the Foundation programme which enable them to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations and present the results.
Research and Consultancy
Research papers have been presented in international conferences in Brunei, UAE, Jordan, India and USA and published in international journals.
Two members of the faculty have successfully completed their Master’s program in Statistics – one from the University of West England, U.K. and the other from the University of Wollongong (UOW), NSW, Australia.
One of the members of the faculty has successfully completed the Master’s program in Mathematics from the University of Kent, UK.
Four members of the faculty have completed their PG Diploma in Higher Education offered by Coventry University, UK.
One of the faculty members has successfully defended his Ph.D. viva voice examination.
