Mathematics play a vital role in different academic fields and scientific research domains. Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences offer different Mathematical modules to different Programmes runs by other academic department in the college. These modules ensure that the students are equipped with further mathematical knowledge required in their major and therefore progressing successfully in their study journey.
To equip students with the basic concepts and techniques in Mathematics, Statistics and Physics in order to promote critical thinking and develop analytical abilities.
To provide the required support for the programs offered in the College.
To help students with their preparation for modules involving Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics.
To promote problem-solving skills.
To inspire students to appreciate the power of Mathematics and related disciplines.
To encourage students to become competent in the use of mathematical software as an effective tool for computation and modelling.
To motivate students to participate in relevant events organised by other Higher Education Institutions.
To nurture the ability to express ideas precisely, consolidate and interpret data, draw logical conclusions and to generalise.
To enable students to become competent in applying Mathematical techniques in other disciplines.
The department is supporting the academic departments at MEC including the Department of Computing, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Department of Management Studies. It also offers a Mathematics module in the General Foundation Programme (GFP) offered by the Centre for Foundation Studies.
The Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences has well-equipped computer laboratories, which provide hands-on experience for students studying various modules in Mathematics and Statistics. These aid the development of numeracy skills, problem solving ability and critical thinking.
MATLAB and SPSS are used with MS Excel in laboratory sessions.
The Department has also established an Engineering Science and an Engineering Physics laboratory which have facilities for conducting various basic to advanced level experiments.
Classroom Presenter and simulation software are used for classroom delivery to enhance students’ learning experience.
Math Referral Centre offer workshops, seminars and other math activities to enhance the mathematical skills for students and faculty.
Fun with Math Activities
Participation in community outreach events and programmes organized by the college
The Math and Science Club conducted an exhibition for two days during the event “Math and Science Day”. It also organized the “Robotic Designing Competition” and workshops for the students.
The Math Referral Centre organised a daylong event “Math Teachers Gathering” in which two technical sessions on Using Technologies for Math Education and SPSS for statistical analysis were conducted for school teachers from the local community as a part of the community outreach program.
Inter-collegiate Mathematics Competition was held in MEC.
Math colloquium April 2018
GFP FEST November 2018
Innovative Teaching & Learning
In-house workshops in SPSS have been conducted by the Faculty of the Department.
In-house seminars on Omanisation and Tablet PC were presented.
Lecture notes for two modules were prepared in e-book format.
Innovative methods of teaching were introduced. They include the use of animation and poster presentations.
State-of-the-art Technology in Teaching like Classroom Presenter with Tablet PC and Simulation Software are being used for some of the modules.
Task-based exercises are given to students in the Foundation programme which enable them to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations and present the results.
Department has won the Best Practice Award in Teaching and Learning for the AY 2016-17 during the Flip Learning Symposium held in April 2017.
One of our department member has received the Best Teaching Award for the AY 2017-18 during the Teaching and Learning Symposium held in May 2018
Research and Consultancy
Research Papers have been presented/published both in international conferences and peer-reviewed indexed journals across the globe.
Two members of the faculty have recogonised as Senior Fellow in Higher Education Academy (HEA), UK and eight members of the faculty have got Fellowship in Higher Education Academy (HEA), UK
