Centre for Postgraduate Studies

The Centre for Postgraduate Studies was established in 2007 with an objective of managing and operationalizing the Postgraduate Programmes at MEC. The Centre, in addition to having its own faculty dedicated to PG teaching, collaborates with faculty members from different departments at MEC for various academic activities. 

Currently, middle and senior level engineers, managers and IT staff from various ministries and private organisations including Ooredoo, Omantel, PDO, Halliburton, Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman, Orix Oman, Muscat Electricity and OAMC are enrolled in the programme. 

The objective of the Centre is to provide students with an environment where they learn strategic and practical aspects of Management, Information Technology, and Engineering which are relevant to their area of work. The aim is to provide comprehensive education to students at postgraduate level, with specific opportunities for personal development and functional specialization, to produce a highly skilled professional who can make effective contributions in the areas of Marketing, Finance, Human Resources Management, Electronic Engineering, Construction Project and Cost Management and Information Technology. 

The specific aims are:

• To provide comprehensive education to students at postgraduate level, with specific opportunities for personal development and functional specialization, and to prepare them for employment in managerial/team lead positions; 
• To consolidate and further develop skills and knowledge acquired through previous study and experience and to enhance the students' transferable and professional skills with a view to augment their wider employment prospects; 
• To enhance the students' analytical, critical, communication and presentation skills, in the context of the modules taught, and to help them relate and apply these aspects to the challenges faced in work environment; 
• To enable the students to address the central problems of applied research in the area of specialization and to enable them to operate as effective independent applied researchers and/or consultants in their chosen specialized areas; 
• To equip students with the ability to critically analyze the potential benefits to business through the application of information technology, business analysis, and model-building; 
• To develop the students' knowledge of the business environment, nature, and scope of business strategies and operations; 
• To critically evaluate the latest research advances in their discipline and consider potential future applications of the work. 
• To interpret theoretical underpinnings in the management of complex systems to achieve systemic change; and an ability to independently design, sustain and manage change within a system 
• To provide relevant and topical subject content, particularly relating to development and deployment of computer-based information systems and operations, for personal and professional development, and to update them on best practices from around the world; 
• To provide the students an opportunity to understand theories, concepts, and issues associated with planning, implementation, and management of information in an organisation;
• To instill an awareness of the need for cost-effectiveness as well as process/system integration within managerial settings and to provide the students with a sound understanding of business functions and business strategies;
