The programme prepares graduates with the knowledge and skills related to the design and industrial applications of electronics including embedded systems, sensors, control and instrumentation with emphasis on sustainability in related processes and solutions.
Undertaken at Bachelors level, this programme will equip students with the most relevant theories and developments in the discipline. Students will understand various electronic and instrumentation concepts to design, operate and maintain equipment, systems, and processes. Students will be encouraged to be creative and innovative in the application of knowledge, and in identifying and solving problems. This curriculum design will improve students’ professional skills leading to wider employment prospects. They will deal with complex issues, both systematically and creatively, based on an in-depth understanding of electronics and computer-assisted tools and techniques. They will have the qualities needed in professional/business environments that require employees with sound judgment, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to lead.
Candidates seeking admission to the programme mentioned should possess a General Education Diploma (Equivalent to 12 years of schooling or equivalent qualification approved by the Ministry of Education, Oman) in the Science stream with at least 65 % mark for both Pure Math and Physics. Further, the student should complete the General Foundation Programme (GFP) or its equivalent.
Instrumentation engineers typically work for industries with automated processes, such as chemical, manufacturing and electrical generation/distribution plants and facilities, with the goal of designing, building, operating and also improving system productivity, reliability, safety, optimisation and stability.
Industries such as Petrochemicals, Power, Water and Waste Water Management, and Cement require qualified Instrumentation engineers across the globe. In Oman, large and small Petroleum, Cement and Electrical Process industries are in need of the services of instrumentation engineers. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Process Control and Automation industries also require engineers whose responsibility involves design, program, simulate and test automated machinery and processes. In addition, the oil and gas exploration and production sector also recruit Instrumentation and Control Engineers for roles in procurement, construction and commissioning, maintenance and operation phases of refinery projects.
Other career opportunities include employment in the sales sector, and maintenance of laboratory and biomedical equipment. This type of equipment is used in hospitals and medical centers, as well as in academic institutions offering programmes in Engineering and Medicine.
